Sergeant Beautyman’s turn came to go home under the‘Python*
scheme. At first he was disposed to let another go in his stead,
then he changed his mind and asked to be released. He had not
been on home leave for over five years, and yet I was surprised
that he should wish to go, for I had cut my ties so completely that
I had no life of my own outside the Army. However, we were
always ready with a substitute for any of us who might fall out :
Brooks took command of the signal section, and, sorrowfully, I
let Beautyman go. He went home, got married to a girl he had
